Helpful Hints
Before marking on the entry form, take some time with the student to talk about quilts. The art of quilt making combines the need for warmth in clothing and bedcovers with our need for interesting lives, along with pleasant, cheerful, and comforting surroundings. Quilts are both seen and touched, like a young child’s security blanket.
Show the student a quilt, a Christmas quilt if possible. Discuss ideas with the student:
Color — Talk about the names of colors. A color wheel showing Primary, Secondary, Complementary, etc. colors is helpful
Intensity — This is the amount of pigment in a color. Talk about Bright and Dull.
Example: a Bright yellow school bus; a Dull brown bear
Value — This is the amount of white in a color, making the color lighter or darker.
Example: Pastel pink and Hot pink
Pattern — The combination of shapes makes a pattern. There are Geometric shapes, such as in the eight-pointed star pattern on this Quilt Block; and there are Organic shapes, like leaves, feathers, or snowflakes. Organic shapes could be drawn into the geometric shapes on the quilt block
A Note about Contests for Children — Never underestimate the value of competing. A contest is designed to inspire and draw out talent and skill. The benefit is in seeing your own efforts out in public. There is also the educational value of experiencing the work of others in your age group who address the same visual problems and come up with a variety of solutions. Then the next time you enter, you might be inspired to new avenues of resourcefulness and adventure.
